Work on Wind Turbine Blades
Fox Islands Wind has been selected by GE, the turbines' manufacturer, as beta test site for a new technology that may reduce the sound output of the wind farm. A team from Aeroconcept, the German company contracted by GE, arrived on the island on July 22 and began work at the site on July 25. The team is not replacing the turbine blades, rather it is installing small serrations or "teeth" on the final third of each blade in an effort to test whether or not they reduce the amount of noise coming from the project.
This work is expected to take several weeks during which each turbine will need to be temporarily shut down. During the first week of work, the team installed a special platform that will allow technicians to easily access each blade and began applying the serrations to the first blade.
